What is a Human Library?

A Human Library is similar to a traditional library only the books are people and reading is a conversation. Each book has a designated topic related to their own personal experiences. Typically, those experiences involve being “different” in our society and the various ways people have experienced prejudice, stereotypes and social stigmas.

Like a traditional library, the goal of Human Library Twin Cities is to have a wide range of human books available to be read. While people might immediately think of topics like Person of Color, Muslim, or Gay/Lesbian, book titles might also include, but are not limited to, topics like:

  • Veteran
  • Homeschooled
  • Vegan
  • Welfare Recipient
  • Ex-convict
  • Autism Spectrum
  • Medical Marijuana User
  • and many more!

Many of us have thoughts or opinions that jump to mind when any of these topics are mentioned, but how many of us have actually talked with someone who lives them? A Human Library offers exactly that opportunity – an opportunity to better understand our neighbors who share our communities.
